Minster of Youth and Sports, Hon. Isaac Asiamah, has revealed that sports disciplines in the country may suffer in their attempt to raise funds to support their activities due to the allocation of limited funds to the ministry.
According to the minster, the huge demand of GH¢46 million (10,717,800) by the Ghana Football Association out of a meagre GH¢63 million (US$14,678,700) allotted to the MoYS may render them helpless in their attempt to inject funds into other sporting disciplines as promised during his vetting.
Speaking at the launch of Ghana’s participation in next year’s Commonwealth Games last Tuesday, the minister indicated that his office was already faced with financial constraints despite receiving a 100% increment in their allocation from the national budget.
As Ghana makes strides in winning medals in Australia at next year’s competition, the Member of Parliament for the Atwima Mponua constituency, disclosed that such financial constraints may hinder the ability of the team to prepare adequately as the tournament beckons.
“Let me give you a case of the constraint we have. If you take the budget of one discipline, football for example, we have about 8 national teams for football. Their budget alone is GH¢63 million for this year, that is what they brought to us so you can imagine,” the minister said.
He feared that the 30 federations under the Ghana Olympic Committee may suffer if the bulk of the money is doled out to the GFA this year. He was however optimistic that the Ministry will strategically define a clear path over the disbursement of the funds to suit all the sporting disciplines.
