The Ministry of Communications, as part of its objective to promote "an all inclusive information society," is pursuing a programme to provide one model Community Information Centre (CIC) in each of the 230 constituencies of Ghana to benefit the peri-urban and rural communities to help bridge the digital gap. "In pursuit of this programme, to date, the Ministry has facilitated the construction of 120 CICs," Mr Haruna Iddrisu, Communications Minister, said in Parliament on Wednesday. The Minister was responding to a question from Mrs Catherine Afeku, NPP member for Evalue Gwira, on when a CIC would be established in her constituency. The Minister said in consultation with the Regional Coordinating Councils (RCCs) arrangements were far advanced to facilitate the construction of 10 additional CICs. He said in line with the decentralized administrative policy, the selection of sites for the project was facilitated through the 10 RCCs in consultation with the district assemblies. The Minister said the request for the construction of a CIC in the Evalue Gwira constituency had been forwarded to the Western Regional RCC to enable it liaise with the Nzema East Municipal Assembly to give the application due consideration after budgetary approval has been secured. In another development, Members of Parliament observed a minute's silence to commemorate Remembrance Day and called for continued efforts to avoid conflicts and promote a peaceful world.
