Editorial The Church & Land Guards

Tragedy unfolded at Avenor near Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra this week when a community near the Neoplan Station in Accra clashed with a group of armed men over a plot of land. The armed men had been hired by a Church, of all institutions, to go and employ brute force to evict the squatters living on the land, but things went dangerously wrong when the squatters organised themselves into another armed gang and met them head-on, killing one of the invaders. Of late, the churches and some people who profess to be representative of God on earth have been receiving mention in all manner of unsavory activities, but the revelation that the Word Miracle Church, headed by Bishop Charles Agyin Aare hired land guards to attack other people must come as an all-time low! Jesus Christ of Nazareth came down to earth some two thousand years ago to preach austerity, love for ones neighbour, and peace among men, but his message of spiritual advancement has been carefully but dubiously corrupted by the people who claim to be his representatives on earth. The world of God has been turned into a multi-billion dollar industry headed by all manner of charlatans who use and abuse it to change their personal circumstances, and this blew up in our faces this week. For many years, this newspaper has been advocating for the promulgation of laws to convert all churches into charities operating under a Charities Commission, with the job of ensuring that all monies raised by these churches go into what God really wanted in the bible, serving charitable causes. It is clear that the charlatans who claim to be men and women of God have turned their churches into temples for their own personal advancement and self-glorification instead of advancing the interests of the deprived and under-privileged, and in this wise, they are becoming, increasingly, a societal problem, because greed begets further greed! We call on government, once again, to take an interest in the avarice that goes on in the name of God and Christ, with a view to bringing some sanity into this industry, which in many instances in abusing the gullible among us!
