AMA Clears Illegal Settlements At Mensah Guinea

A taskforce from the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has embarked on an exercise to remove wooden structures which are rapidly developing at Mensa Guinea and serving as homes for squatters and suspected miscreants.

Joseph Okine, Metro Security Coordinator and Head of Operations of AMA who led the team, said the exercise would be extended to areas such as Circle, Avenor, Railway Line, among others, where squatters have taken over public space thereby affecting the beauty of the city.

He said the AMA in March and October, 2017 notified the squatters to remove their structures with notable red paint inscriptions which could visibly be seen on the structures, but they failed to do so hence, the action to remove them.

The Mensah Guinea settlement, which consists of mostly wooden structures, was demolished about two years ago after an outbreak of cholera in the area. It is part of the land space earmarked for the Marine Drive Project.

The AMA, as part of its initiatives to make Accra the cleanest city in Africa as stated by President Akufo-Addo, has rolled out several initiatives such as a waste segregation programme for basic schools, the formation of waste management committees for specific business enclaves, the refurbishment of sanitation courts as well as the Green Senior High School Project.
