National Vice Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Samuel Ofosu Ampofo has called on President Nana Akufo-Addo and Foreign Minister, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey to alert the African Union to intervene in the Libyan slave trade.

"It's very disturbing for Africa to witness a new era of slave trade. The selling and buying of humans was thought to be an ancient practice until recently, which the Libyan citizenry have revived the trade," he said.

Hundreds of African migrants are reportedly being sold for as low as $200 in modern-day slave markets.

In view of this, there has been a strong call on the African leaders to devise ways to end such barbaric acts ongoing at Libya.

Describing the situation as appalling and disgraceful to the African continent, Mr. Ofosu Ampofo noted that Ghana has always been a beacon of democracy in Africa and so believed actions by the President and Foreign Ministry will help curb this canker.

“The Foreign Minister should activate a system that will call on the AU to quickly convene and look at this matter. Ghana is always a pace-setter. And I think that the President and the Foreign Ministry could do something about this situation”, he said on Kokrokoo on Peace FM Tuesday.

Also multiple award-winning Broadcaster, Kwami Sefa Kayi has also implored the African Union to tackle the issue with urgency.

"...where is the African Union…there is a slave migrant. We can’t just keep talking without any action. African Union (AU) should do something pragmatic now", he stressed.
