Lack of Quorum: Mike Oquaye Suspends Sitting

Parliament suspended sitting today, Wednesday, 20 December over lack of quorum.

The number of legislators in the chamber as of 8:30 a.m. when the session began was inadequate to form a quorum leaving Speaker Prof Mike Oquaye with no choice than to suspend proceedings after an hour when the numbers were still not enough to conduct the business of the day.

Member of Parliament for Adaklu, Kwame Agbodza told Class FM that he believes the Majority caucus is not taking parliamentary business seriously.

“Some time ago, it was about lateness and these days it is the numbers. …If at the start of sitting, we don’t have one-third of the members ready, we need to draw the attention of the Speaker so that he will close parliament.

“If government has got work to do and they can’t even whip their own people – over 160 – to the floor to work, you don’t have to blame anybody. You know I’m almost always the first to come to parliament. We are ready to work, they (Majority) are the ones who are not ready to work,” he stated.

He continued: “In fact they (Majority) don’t need us (Minority) to form a quorum in parliament but they hardly turn up on time and today unfortunately we needed to apply the law and Speaker has to suspend sitting”.

Mr Agbodza explained that the Speaker had to wait for more than 30 minutes before concluding on the suspension, adding “the majority has to take parliament work more seriously”.
