Rastaman Jailed 5yrs For Possessing ‘Wee’

A “Rastaman” was on Monday jailed five years in hard labour by the Accra Circuit Court “One” for possessing 668 wraps of Indian hemp (wee).

Daniel Soku was convicted and sentenced on his own plea of guilty.

The Judge, Mr. Aboagye Tandoh, however, sentenced, Gideon Akanbey, an accomplice who was also arrested with one wrap of “wee” to one day imprisonment and fined GH¢1,200.00, in default serve additional three months in jail.

Superintendent Mrs. Patience Mario, prosecuting, said that police personnel at Adenta in the Greater Accra Region received a report from Mr. Dominic Akandoli of Nmai Djorn in December 3, 2017, that Akanbey had dishonestly appropriated his (Akandoli’s) two mobile phones and they went to arrest him.

She said that the police found Akanbey holding a roll of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp ready to light and smoke and was arrested.

According to Supt. Mrs Mario, a search in his room led to the discovery of another six wraps of the substance, and upon interrogation, Akanbey mentioned Gideon Soku as the supplier.

She said that the police proceeded to the house of Gideon at Adenta and arrested him but a search in his room also revealed 668 wraps of dried leaves, a quantity of dried leaves and a quantity of dried seeds suspected to be cannabis sativa (wee), pieces of cement paper, three pairs of scissors, a hammer, a screw driver, iron pincher among others.

She said that the convicts admitted the offences of smoking and possession of Indian hemp without authority during investigation.

Mr. Tandoh ordered the police to destroy the substance in the presence of the circuit court Registrar after three months of his judgement.

He said that the quantity of dried leaves found with Gideon Soku meant that he was, indeed, supplying the narcotics to other people to use.
