Courts remands driver

A 30-year-old driver appeared before a circuit court in Accra for allegedly defrauding a medical practitioner of GHC107, 000 and 7,700 dollars under the pretext of purchasing vehicles for him. Stephen Bright Kwadwo Addae, who was expected to purchase two saloon cars, a range rover and two articulated trucks for the medical officer, pleaded guilty to defrauding by false pretences. The court presided over by Mr Justice Joe Abangah, deferred sentence to December 16 and remanded the accused in Police custody to enable the Police conduct further investigations into properties allegedly acquired with the money. When the trial judge asked the accused about the money, he could not offer any reason. Mr Abangah told the accused that "the state would go after your properties to defray the money. Never think that you would go to jail and come back to enjoy the stolen money". Police Inspector Michael Jubiok said the complainant, Dr Henry Broni Amponsah, resides at Ashalley Botwe and works with Swedish Medical Centre in Accra and Takoradi. Prosecution said in 2008, the complainant engaged Addae as a driver and a year later discussed the intention to purchase some vehicles for the centre, with the accused. Insp. Jubiok said the accused convinced the complainant that he could contact some Custom Excise and Preventive Service personnel to assist in the purchase of some auctioned vehicles at moderate prices. He said the accused demanded GHC60, 000 from the complainant to purchase two trucks and a four wheel drive but failed to honour his promise. Insp. Jubiok said in March 2009, the accused told the complainant that he could assist him (complainant) to purchase a Range Rover for his wife through a friend within three weeks. Prosecution said that Addae lied to the complainant that the vehicle had arrived at the Tema Harbour and demanded GHC17,000 to pay custom duty and GHC30, 000 for another four wheel drive. Insp. Jubiok said in another development, the accused allegedly purchased a Honda Pilot car valued at 43,000 dollars from the complainant's company but failed to pay for it.
