4 Die In Achimota Highway Accident

Four persons died while several others sustained various degrees of injury when an Nsawam–Accra bound Mercedes Sprinter bus crashed into a concrete barrier under the Taifa Junction overpass.

The dead, according to the police, are all males between the ages of 21 and 40.

Driver of the bus, with registration number GY 1438 -13, the police confirmed, was in critical condition and receiving treatment at the Police Hospital.

The bodies of the deceased persons – who are yet to be identified – have also been deposited at the same hospital for preservation.

Earlier reports indicated that eight persons died on the spot.

According to the reports, the vehicle somersaulted several times and landed on other vehicles.

When the Accra Regional Police Spokesperson, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Efia Tenge, was contacted, she confirmed that four persons died on the spot.

Narrating how the accident occurred to this paper, she said at about 7:30 am yesterday, the driver of the Sprinter bus (name not yet known) with a 23-seater capacity, was from Nsawam and heading towards Accra.

According to ASP Tenge, on reaching the Taifa Junction underpass, two tyres of the vehicle burst and the driver lost control of the steering wheel.

The Mile 7 police were immediately called to the scene and together with personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service, the driver was rescued and sent to the Police Hospital for treatment.

The other injured persons were rescued and transported to the hospital by some good Samaritans, leaving the dead persons at the spot.
