10 Students Arrested Over Katanga, Vandal Clash

A violent clash between students from the Commonwealth Hall (Vandals) of the University of Ghana, Legon and their counterparts from the University Hall (Katanga) of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has left one person severely injured and properties destroyed.

Ten students have been arrested by the Legon police in connection with the act, which occurred Monday afternoon at the Legon campus.
Information received indicated that the Katanga boys had arrived in Accra from Kumasi in the Ashanti Region to participate in a debate organised by their ally (Sarbah Hall) of the University of Ghana.
According to a report, the clash started when students of Katanga Hall – who were lodging at Sarbah Hall for the debate – were seen on a video footage assaulting a student from Commonwealth Hall.

The said video, which went viral on campus, showed a student believed to be in his 20s and vandal, being molested by the visiting Kantaga guys.

Infuriated by the act, the report said, the vandals also mobilised themselves and stormed the venue for the debate, generating into the clash.

Louver blades and glasses of Mensah Sarbah Hall were destroyed as a result of the violence.

The Accra Regional Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Efia Tenge, who was at the scene together with other personnel to ensure peace, told DAILY GUIDE that the incident occurred at about 2:30 pm on Monday.

She confirmed that ten students were picked for rioting and sent to the Legon and the East Legon police stations for safe keeping.

ASP Tenge said after interrogation, they were cautioned and released at about 9:00 pm to their hall masters to enable them write their interim assessment examination.

It has been reported that at about 1:00 am Tuesday, about 30 unidentified students went and threw stones at the shattered louvre blades at the Sarbah Hall main entrance.

She said, the internal security personnel of the school were assisting the police to calm down tempers.
