Prison Officer Jailed For Narcotics

A prison officer, 2CO. Abibula Nankpa attached to the Ankaful Main Camp Prison has been sentenced to 13 years imprisonment by the Cape Coast Circuit Court 3, for the possession of narcotic drugs.

It would be recalled that on 5th August, 2016, the officer was shot in the hip by guards on duty at the Ankaful Maximum Security Prison when he was found to be throwing some items into the facility.

He was arrested and handed over to the police as the items were suspected to be Indian hemp.

2CO. Nankpa had since been in and out of court, until 30th April when the ruling was read.

He was acquitted and discharged on the first count of supplying narcotics as the court could not establish what the drugs were meant for but was however sentenced to 13 years on the second count of wrongly possessing narcotics.

Presiding Judge, Justice Afia Amankwaa, stated that he should have known better as a law enforcement official.

The Central Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Prisons Service, DSP Daniel Machator urged prison officers to do their work diligently.

"As law enforcement agents who take care of offenders of the law, its your duty to ensure law and order in the prisons rather than breaching the law yourself", Mr.. Machator stressed.
