Teacher and Nursing trainees took to social media to celebrate the payment of three months arrears of their promised allowance, which was scrapped by the John Mahama government.

In 2014, the government of former president John Mahama cancelled the payment of all allowances, including nursing trainees’, with the then President saying he wouldn’t mind losing an election over it.

The scrapping of the allowances was met with grave disapproval by the Teacher and Nursing trainees, leading to then candidate Akufo-Addo promising during the 2016 campaign to restore it if he wins, which he did.

MyNewsGh.com reported about the launch of the restoration of both the Teacher Trainees and Nursing trainees allowance by Vice President Bawumia and President Akufo-Addo respectively in Accra and Sunyani.

The government said the restored monthly allowances of the trainee nurses alone will cost a whopping GH¢232million this academic year and about 58,000 nurses and midwives are expected to benefit from the restored policy. They will be paid GH¢400 each monthly during the 2017/2018 academic year.

The Conference of Heads of Health Training Institutions (COHHETI) praised the government for restoring the scrapped allowances.

It is in line with the above that yesterday Trainees across the country received an important beep on their phones, notifying them that they have been paid their months arrears.
