President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Thursday led a powerful government delegation to mourn the late Akenten Appiah-Menka.
The delegation included among others, Vice President Alhaji Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia and ministers of state.
The late Appiah-Amenka was a founding member of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), who lived most of his life in Kumasi, the Ashanti regional capital.
He was a prominent lawyer, industrialist and true democrat who played vital roles in returning the country from military to civilian rule in 1992.
The late Appiah-Menka, who is a household name in the political arena in the country, was given a state burial in recognition of his contributions to the state.
His body was laid in state at the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) in Kumasi early Thursday morning for people from all walks of life to pay their last respects, after President Akufo-Addo and his entourage had done so.
Members of the bereaved family, the clergy, businessmen, politicians from the various political parties, also paid their respects.
Reading his tribute, President Akufo-Addo described Mr Appiah-Menka as a true patriot who dedicated his life to the development of mother Ghana.
He said Appiah-Menka’s death is a big blow to the country, recounting his significant contributions towards Ghana’s transformation.
A number of people wept uncontrollably, especially his family members, friends and loved ones.
The mortal remains of the late Appiah-Menka were expected to be buried in his hometown at Abuabugya in the Ashanti Region, later yesterday.
