Military personnel urged to be dedicated to duty

Major Cornelius Kobla Lithur, Commanding Officer of 3BN Garrison, on Tuesday cautioned soldiers that the unit would not tolerate indiscipline, unprofessional behaviour and activities for which the Army was not constitutionally mandated. He urged commanders at all levels to instil discipline in their personnel, be dedicated to duty and lead exemplary lives to achieve the best for the unit. Major Lithur was addressing officers, men, women and civilian employees of the garrison at an end of year get-together at the Liberation Barracks in Sunyani. He reminded the soldiers to conduct all operations according to military standards, operating procedures and laid down rules and regulations. "It is very important for us to recognize that in the current democratic dispensation, the rule of law prevails and as such our activities must conform to this vital constitutional provision," Major Lithur said. He reiterated the need for personnel to exhibit a high level of tolerance even in the face of extreme provocation and to strive hard to improve relations with civil society in order to engender peaceful co-existence for national development. The Commanding Officer said the unit would continue to support the civil authority to maintain law and order through operation 'calm life' and other tasks when requested. Major Lithur commended all ranks for their efforts and hard-work in ensuring that activities on the training calendar of the Ghana Armed Forces during the 2009 Training Year was successfully hosted and organised by the unit. Mr Kwadwo Nyamekye-Marfo, Brong-Ahafo Regional Minister, re-echoed the military's traditional role of protecting the sovereignty and peace of the nation. He noted with happiness that the international community had appreciated and recognized the role of the Ghana Armed Forces in peace keeping and commended soldiers and other security agencies for their efforts and hard-work to make the 2008 elections peaceful. The Regional Minister said the government had obtained a 10 billion dollar facility from a South Korean company to undertake housing projects for security agencies in the country. Mr Nyamekye-Marfo gave the assurance that the government was determined to improve the living conditions of security agencies. The garrison gave prizes to deserving officers, men, women and civil employees.
