Woman fined GHC 72 for causing nuisance

An elderly woman has made two appearances before the Asamankese Circuit Court on charges of creating nuisance and causing health hazard. Yaa Donkor, who pleaded guilty with explanation to both counts, was ordered to pay a fine of GHC 72 or go to jail for a month in default. The West Akyem Municipal Environmental Health Officer, Mr Samuel Danso, prosecuting, said Yaa operates an oil palm processing mill near a hotel and poured the dirty water from the mill behind the hotel creating nuisance. Despite several warnings to desist from that she persisted in her action and was therefore charged with the offence. Yaa again, according to an environmental health officer allowed an un-kept and unhygienic pit latrine on her premises. The pit was full of human excreta with flies "having a field day" and posing danger to those living in the area. She ignored advice from the environmental health officers to close the facility and continued to use it. Yaa was however made to pay only the first fine of GHC 72.
