Ghana’s boxing hub, the Bukom Boxing Arena on Saturday, witnessed a great night of boxing as ten boxers drawn from some of the highly rated boxing gyms in the country fought opponents in their respective divisions to climax Azumah Nelson’s 60th birthday celebrations.

It was a night that brought former sports Ministers, Nii Lante Vanderpuiye and Nii Amarkai Amarteifio, British High Commissioner Ian Walker, Ghana Boxing Authority President Peter Zwennes and a host of distinguished personalities under one roof to celebrate Africa’s first and only boxing hall famer.

The special edition of the Azumah Nelson Fight Night which was for their first time promoted by the boxing legend saw 5 bouts lined up with the National Superfeatherweight Championship contest between Abraham Osei Bonsu and Patrick Ayi being the headline bout.

Out of the five terrific fights which were witnessed on the night, three were decided by knockout with only two bouts being decided by the judges’ scorecard.

Nigeria’s Wahab Olwasuen claimed the victory of the night with a sixth-round knockout of Togo’s Moubi Sarouna in their super featherweight battle.

Stephen Abbey added one more win to his impressive record of 18 victories after handing a technical knockout to Emmanuel Danso in the National Super Featherweight contest.

The third and final knockout of the night was pulled off by Sherrif Quaye who landed a heavy blow on the face of an already jaded Benjamin Lartey in the seventh round to ensure that the bout does not travel the full distance.

In the National Lightweight Championship division, Isaac Dowuana alias Zongo fire who came into the ring in a similar fashion to Jesus’ triumphant entry to Jerusalem could not walk the talk as he got battered by Michael Amoah who could have knocked him out but decided to see out the entire rounds for reasons best known to him.

At the end of the bout the judges’ scorecards read 99-93, 99-90, 99-94 in favour of Michael Amoah.

The biggest bout of the night was against two boxers who are sworn enemies and have been calling out each other for ages.

The animosity between the boxers was apparent as both of them at some point in the fight resorted to very foul means to win points, forcing the referee to dock points from one of them after he shoved his colleague.

Bonsu alias No Shaking and Ayi alias Alligator capped off a great night with 12 explosive rounds of boxing.

It was a close contest between the two fighters who gave a good account of themselves and the judges' scoreline of 117-114, 113-117, 115-117 in favour Ayi is a fair reflection of how the bout panned out.
