The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Alhaji Mohammed Mumuni says he would not mind running for the flagbearership position of the NDC if the party says so. Alhaji Mohammed Mumuni speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show with host, Moro Awudu said people should not be surprised if his name pops up one day as a contender for the Presidency. According to him, as a true NDC man he is always prepared to serve his party in any capacity. He added that if it is the will of his party and the people to lead them he will not hesitate in taking such a decision. �I have always said that I am a true and true NDC man and I have devoted my life to serving my people and also serving the NDC.� He said. Alhaji Mumuni disclosed that he is ready to serve �in any capacity that it is deemed that I can be of use to my party and to my people; I am prepared to perform in that capacity�If it is the will of my party and the will of my people clearly I will consider why not�. He said. The former Member of Parliament for Kumbungu was the running mate for the then candidate Mills for the 2004 elections but was saddled with a car crash days after being introduced to the party in Cape Coast. The Foreign Affairs Minister however, disagreed that his inclusion on the ticket caused the defeat of the NDC in that election. On the issue of the 23 year-old Nigerian terrorist who is said to have sojourned in Ghana for a while before embarking on his foiled lethal assignment, the Foreign Affairs minister said investigations were ongoing in the attempted plane bombing incident. On Christmas day last year, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab was arrested as he tried to detonate a device suspected to be explosives he had hidden on himself aboard a plane which was bound for Detroit in the United States. His botched terrorist attempt has renewed calls for security intensification at various airports across the world. The Minister said although there has been some progress in the investigations, they are yet to confirm the information gathered. Alhaji Mumuni added that the government is wary in releasing information to the public on the matter since investigations are not yet concluded. �As of now we are very cautious about releasing information that we have not fully verified and therefore perhaps I will just say that yes the matter is under investigations, we are following up on our leads, we are verifying and checking some of these information that are coming through.� He added. According to him, this has become necessary due to Ghana�s intensified efforts to clamp down on acts of terrorism. Commenting on the government�s decision to install body scanners at the Kotoka International Airport, Mr. Mumuni said although there are human rights implications, there are equally security related issues that needs to be addressed. �Well they are legitimate issues but clearly also the issue of safety for everybody and the travelling public is also a legitimate issue, it�s a question of balance. We have to balance the two and get an optimal position which will protect human rights and at the same time guarantee safety for the travelling public�. He added. The government recently announced that a full body scanner is being installed at the Ghana�s main airport, to forestall any security breaches at the airport. After the installation, the equipment is expected to give security officials the opportunity to fairly assess every passenger or persons using the airport. The installation of the security scanners has however raised concerns by some human rights activists who argue that the device which is said to reveal 3-D images of subjects will lead to violation of privacy rights of people.
