The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has pegged filing fees for a flagbearer aspirant of the party at four hundred thousand Ghana cedis (400,000 Ghana cedis).

Picking of forms will attract a charge of twenty thousand Ghana cedis (20,000gh).

This was made known at a press conference held Thursday at the party's headquarters.

All payments are non refundable.

This decision was taken at National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on Wednesday

Addressing the press at the party's headquarters in Accra, General Secretary of the party, Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketia explained that the party after deliberations at a retreat after their national delegates' congress will organize elections on the 19th of January 2019 across the 275 constituencies of the country to elect a flagbearer for the party.

Picking of Forms

Picking of forms by aspirants commences at 9am to 5pm on the 3rd of December and ends on the 4th of the same month.

Candidates according to the General Secretary of the party will have 10 days to go round all the 275 constituencies to have their forms endorsed by branch and regional executives of the party.

Submission of forms will also begin on the 13th and 14th of December between 9am and 5pm on the said dates.

He added that vetting commences on the 17th and 18th of December this year to assess aspirants who would want to lead the party for election 2020.

However, female candidates will pay 50% less of the filing fee while there will be an additional reduction for aspirants with physical disabilities.

Per the 1992 constitution of the country which also falls in line with the party’s constitution, anybody with 10 years membership and in good standing qualifies to stand as flagbearer for the party.

Elections he reiterated will be held across the 275 constituencies of the country with the national headquarters being the coalition and declaration Centre.

For the first time in the history of the largest opposition party, executives of the party at the branch, constituency, regional levels as well as national executives, will take place in the process to decide their flagbearer.

The party has also advised that campaigns between aspirants must be civil and that anybody found casting slur on any aspirant will be punished according to the laws of the party.

The election originally scheduled for December 7, 2018, was put on hold to allow the newly elected national officers some time to plan for the presidential primaries.

The NDC a couple of weeks ago went to congress and elected new national officers led by newly elected Chairman, Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, to steer its affairs for the next four years.

Thanks Giving

The party also announced that they will hold a thanks giving service on the 2nd of December at the Nungua Church of Pentecost to give thanks to the almighty God for a successful congress.

Aspirants

About 11 people including former President John Mahama have declared their intention to lead the NDC in the 2020 polls.

The former President wants a comeback while the others are asking members to choose a new face to lead the party.

They are: Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin; a former Trade Minister, Ekwow Spio-Garbrah and a former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Sylvester Adinam Mensah.

The rest are the former Vice Chancellor of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), Professor Joshua Alabi; a banker and oil and gas consultant, Nurideen Iddrisu; the Member of Parliament (MP) for Cape Coast South, George Kwaku Ricketts Hagan; a member of the NDC’s communication team, Stephen Atubiga; lawyer­­­ Elikplim Agbemava, Mr David Dotse Kwame Kuwadah and Goosie Tanoh.
