Second Lady Fete Children In Accra Regional Hospital On Boxing Day

The Second Lady, Samira Bawumia on Wednesday, 26th  December 2018, visited the neonatal intensive care unit on the pediatric ward of the Greater Accra Regional Hospital upon invitation to support them on their Boxing Day activities and also interact with management, staff and the nursing mothers.

According to her, the kind gesture was to bring joy to the mothers stuck in the hospital during the festive season.

Mrs. Bawumia donated several items such as nappies, Kalypo fruit juice, Golden Tree chocolate, story books, crayons, toys, wet wipes, food for everyone and a donation of GHC 20000 to the pediatric unit of the hospital.

Speaking to the media, she stated “if you care about people, you have to help them in the best way you can and today being Christmas; a lot of family are enjoying. So, we take the opportunity to also come celebrate with mothers who are stuck in the hospital”.

She also identified medication and equipment as a major challenge confronting the hospital saying “drugs for mothers and babies are often either not readily available or too expensive to buy”.

“They need some more equipment and medication on hand because some of the medications and supplies take a while to procure. If they could have more in the store, they could use that until parents can raise funds or get replenishment for the hospital,” she added.

Interacting with the nursing mothers, she was confronted with a situation where a 15-year-old teenager has delivered a set of twins prematurely without a father.

“I have asked for her details so that, first of all, we make sure the children do well and after that we see how we can integrate her back to school”.

She also pledged to support a lady whose two-year-old child has suffered extensive burns with a cost treatment of GHC 5000.

While expressing his appreciation to the Second Lady for her enormous help, the Medical Director of Ridge hospital, Dr Emmanuel Srofenyo said the cash donation would be used as seed money to set up an endowment fund for the department so that the Second Lady’s gesture benefits everyone.
