Akufo Addo Is An Elected Dictator - Alban Bagbin

Deputy Speaker of Parliament and Member of Parliament for Nadowli-Kaleo constituency, Hon Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has stated emphatically that Ghana has lost its democratic credentials and is rather being governed by an "elected dictator".

According to him, there are some weakness and lapses in the constitution which needs to be amended.

Speaking to Okay FM’s Ade Akye Abia Programme, he proposed that there should be an urgent discussion for constitutional reforms to scrap off some of the powers of the President if the country is indeed committed to practicing true democracy.

“The time is right for us to update our constitution; it is too voluminous as compared to UK and other countries."

The President appoints everybody, the President is the head of the party, the President is the head of government, the President decides the budget, the President can decide even though you have approved the money for an item they won’t release the money and you can’t do anything. Is that democracy? No!” he stated.

We have elected dictators. That is what we have set up in the constitution. There is no difference between them and the military leaders”, he disclosed.

He also indicated that governance in the country irrespective of the government in power has been taken as a joke.

When people lose hope in good governance, they resort to anything and we can’t allow things to continue this way,” he stressed.
