Leaked Tape: Kwaku Boahen Makes 'Dramatic' U-turn - I Was Not Part of The Meeting

Deputy Communications Officer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Kwaku Boahen, has made a rather dramatic volte-face on comments earlier made reagrding the contents of the infamous Ofosu-Ampofo leaked viral audio.

The NDC activist now says he was not present at the meeting where their Chairman, Mr. Ofosu-Ampofo is said to have made some unfortunate comments.

Leaked Tape

A leaked audio, which purportedly captures the voice of the NDC National Chairman, calling for a 'relentless war' against Jean Mensa, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), went viral last week.

Mr. Ofosu-Ampofo, in a purported leaked audio recording circulating could be heard telling some party members of the NDC that “ . . the EC Chair, we must wage a relentless war against this EC Chair.

The recording is believed to have been done at a meeting after the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency by-election held on January 31, 2019.

Mr. Ofosu-Ampofo could be heard also complaining about the treatment of the NDC’s parliamentary candidate for the by-election, Delali Kwasi Brempong, whose La Bawaleshie residence on the day of voting became the centre for gun battle between National Security operatives and supporters of the NDC.

We Applauded Ofosu At NDC Meeting

Kwaku Boahen, had in an earlier interview with Akwasi Aboagye on NEAT FM’s morning show, ‘Ghana Montie’, asserted boldly that “We the party [NDC communication] members are very happy of what our Chairman said and we will do exactly that. What he said is dear to our hearts that is why we clapped for him during the meeting which was recorded and leaked.

Backing his National Chair, Kweku Boahen further stated "so don’t you know the EC boss is a member of the NPP, she wears their T-shirt at secret meetings. She does their [NPP] works for them as EC boss. We won’t sit unconcerned. We have issues with her before her appointment as EC boss. She is not even fit for the position.”

“Just as our Chairman said, we will unleash war against her. She is a member of the NPP. Nobody can shut us up,” he angrily said.

Dramatic U-turn

But in sharp turnaround in an interview with Kwame Nkrumah Tikesie on Okay FM's 'Ade Akye Abia' programme, Kweku Boahen completely changed his narrative saying he was not even present at the said meeting.

According to him, he had been admitted at a hospital in Kumasi and had sought permission from some executives of the party to seek medical attention in Kumasi.

"I was taken ill and was at a Kumasi based hospital receiving treatment on that day."

"So how can I record my Chairman?" he asked rhetorically.

When his attention was drawn to his earlier remarks on NeatFM, he offered this response: "I was trying to act on my responsibility as a deputy Communication Officer when the media called, but the media twisted the news for their own gain".

He maintained that he was not at the meeting and therefore cannot be held responsible by the rank and file of the party for recording and leakage of the tape.

"They should stop pointing accusing fingers at me, because I am saying it emphatically that I am innocent and therefore did not record my Chairman," he said.
