Reversing Free SHS By Any Govt. Will Be Disastrous - PUCG President

President of the Presbyterian University College of Ghana, Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Adow Obeng says it will be disastrous for any government to attempt to reverse the free SHS and is therefore calling for a legislation to prevent successive governments from abandoning the program as well as other good educational policies.

Casting doubts successive governments could sustain the program, Professor Adow Obeng noted that the unavailability of a legal framework could ruin the policy.

According to him, the free SHS program could be a mere manifesto policy should it be changed by the government.

Speaking at a ceremony to churn out the University’s maiden graduate studies students on the theme “The Role Of Graduate Teachers In Educational Reforms”, Professor Adow Obeng said the program was to provide openings for the graduates who want to be trained as teachers to upgrade their qualifications and skills.

President for PUCG also urged Ghanaians to seek to protect good reforms in the education sector.

Despite the numerous educational reforms Ghana has had in the past 60 years, there have been failures in achieving the objectives and these can be attributed to inconsistency in government policies, inadequate funding, lack of proper mentoring and unfortunately the menace of basing educational reforms on party manifestos instead of national development agenda.

The PUCG President is of the view that these graduates from the University would play key and significant roles in the country and beyond.

“I’m the face of the ever changing policy reforms in the educational sector,” he said.

The Moderator for the Presbyterian Church Of Ghana, Rev. Prof. J.O.Y Mante, also on his part stated that the aim of every country is to have disciplined citizenry who can steer the affairs of the nation at all levels.

He challenged the graduates saying “as teachers, they are nation builders and have the capacity to influence students inside and outside the classroom serving as mentors and role models with an attitude to always listen to them and help them transform their environment”.
