We, members of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) of the Kumasi campus of the University of Education, Winneba, wish to express our gratitude to the President of the Republic of Ghana, HIS EXCELLENCY NANA ADDO-DANKWA AKUFO ADDO, the King of the Ashanti Kingdom, HIS ROYAL MAJESTY OTUMFOUR OSEI TUTU II, the Minister of Education, HON. DR. MATTHEW OPOKU PREMPEH, the Minister of State in Charge of Tertiary Education, HON. PROF. KWESI YANKAH, the Ashanti Regional Minister, HON. SIMON OSEI- MENSAH and many other stakeholders for the steps taken so far to make the Kumasi and Mampong campuses of UEW a full-fledged autonomous University for the training of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) teachers for Ghana and Africa.
It will be recalled that on 31st August. 2018, the Minister of Education announced to the Principals of Colleges of Education during their annual meeting of the government’s intention to make the Kumasi and Mampong campuses of the University of Education, Winneba together with eight other Technical and Vocational oriented Colleges of Education autonomous University to specialize in training teachers for (TVET) sector in Technical Institutions and Master Craftsmen.
To increase our confidence in the government’s commitment in making the Kumasi and Mampong campuses of the University of Education, Winneba, autonomous, the Ashanti Regional Minister on 28th November, 2018, at the 23rd Congregation of the University of Education, Winneba held at the College of Technology Education, Kumasi (COLTEK), stated unequivocally his support and commitment for the government’s decision to make the Kumasi and the Mampong campuses of the UEW an autonomous University.
In keeping faith with the government’s commitment to quality TVET and in line with the public statements of the Minister of Education, the President through the Minister of Finance has made provision for the yet to be created University in the 2019 budget statement.
It is also heart-warming to note that the Minister of Education and his team of experts have been working tirelessly towards the realization of the autonomous status of COLTEK.
We, members of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG–COLTEK) wish to express our sincere gratitude to the government for the steps taken so far to upgrade these two campuses to an autonomous status. UTAG-COLTEK wishes to state that we are very much prepared to support and make this vision of government a reality.
UTAG-COLTEK wishes to further state that we have kept faith with our mandate of training highly professional Technical and Vocational Teachers who occupy responsible positions in society.
We are ready to cooperate with government to see to the attainment of our highly anticipated autonomous University for the training of TVET teachers.
We, members of the University Teachers Association (UTAG-COLTEK), wish to reiterate the point of the Ashanti Regional Minister (Hon. Simon Osei Mensah) that the autonomy of the two campuses is ‘long overdue’.
