Businessman Sues GWCL, PURC For Causing Financial Loss To The State [Video]

Businessman, Mohammed Bashiru has dragged the Ghana Water Company Limited [GWCL] and the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission [PURC] to court.

He claimed that the first defendant, GWCL had sponsored the creation of a desalination company called Befesa Desalination Development Ghana to turn sea water into potable water - a contract he said is not in the best interest of the Ghanaian taxpayer.

Speaking on NEAT FM’s evening political programme, ‘Torchlight’, with Mac Jerry Osei Agyeman, Mohammed Bashiru noted that himself together with one Seth Tagoe raised some concerns that the sea water if turned into potable water will not be good for human consumption.

According to him, residents of Teshie and its environs where the desalinated water would be supplied to also kicked against the project, with claims that the water will not be good for their consumption.

In a writ to GWCL and PURC, Mohammed Bashiru stated that even though the company is not in operation now, government is “wasting money”.

“The cost is too astronomical with devastating impact on the economy. When they are operating, they consume 700,000 US dollars worth of energy per month, and when the company shuts down, not operating; the machines cost 1.4 million dollars a month,” he said.

Mohammed Bashiru is however seeking the court to order the Ghana Water Company Limited [GWCL] and the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission [PURC] who are in partnership for the project to revoke its operation ‘for good’ since “It is not in the best interest of the Ghanaian taxpayer”.
