'Nonsensical' Invitation . . . Police Witch-hunting Ofosu-Ampofo – Boakye Gyan

One of the architects of the June 4th uprising, Major (RTD) Osahene Boakye Gyan has accused the Ghana Police Service of embarking on a "political witch-hunt" in the matter of the National Democratic Congress (NDC's) Chairman, Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo’s leaked tape.

He believes the Police Service is going about the issue the wrong way since Ofosu-Ampofo is not a nonetity in politics, but happens to be the Chairman of the biggest opposition party in this country.

The former military officer with strong leanings with the NDC, also described the CID’s invitation to the party’s National Chairman as "nonsensical and politically motivated".

Speaking in an interview with Kwame Nkrumah Tikesie on Okay FM’s 'Ade Akye Abia' programme, a clearly riled Boakye-Gyan, vowed to destroy the police's invitation letter had it found its way into his hands.

"The NPP has failed as a government and they want to cover up with this kind of shameful behavior which does not bode well for the country . . ."

"They know they are going to lose the 2020 elections and that is why they have started applying intimidation tactics to frustrate us, but our research shows that the NDC will regain power in the next elections," he stated.

"I would have torn the invitation letter into pieces if the letter was sent to me. Their agenda is just to derail former president Mahama's 2020 victory, but it will not wash," he fumed.

Mr Ofosu-Ampofo has officially declined an invitation extended to him by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).

The CID of the Ghana Police Service had on Wednesday May 8, invited Mr. Ofosu Ampofo to answer questions on allegations of kidnappings and arson.

According to the security outfit, individuals it had picked up so far on suspicions of kidnapping and arson have mentioned Mr. Ofosu-Ampofo “as part of a grand scheme designed to cause fear and panic in the country.”

He is already standing trial for an alleged leaked tape in which he was purportedly heard instigating the assassination and kidnapping of certain persons in a bid to present the country as unsafe.

He also threatened ‘war’ against the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa.

Major(rtd) Boakye-Gyan reiterated that the case of Mr. Ofosu-Ampofo is an investigative process and that what the police should have done is to tender their fresh evidence to court instead of publicizing it.

“The case is in court but this particular evidence has not been tendered in court yet, so if they (police) have belief in it (their evidence) it should be adduced as part of their evidence and go to court that they have fresh evidence to charge against Mr. Ofosu-Ampofo . . . and let him (Mr. Ofosu-Ampofo) go to court and contest it .  .  . you don’t invite him to come and answer to a case that is already in court  . . . what is he going to answer?” he quizzed.

“ . . it was wrong for the police to bring the case to the public domain whiles the case is still in court . . . the case is in court and we are not to comment about it so I was expecting the police not to bring some facts of the case in public domain.

"Why is it that the police are motivated to do the things they are not suppose to do . . . the police are being politically motivated to witch-hunt Mr. Ofosu-Ampofo and it is wrong,” he stressed.
