Accident victims in Nzema-East increased in 2009

The number of people who died through motor accidents in the Nzema-East municipality of the Western Region, rose slightly from 12 in 2008 to 14 in 2009. Also, 32 persons sustained various degrees of injury in 2008 compared to 173 in 2009. The Nzema-East Municipal Police Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) David Lovelace Tesutor was giving an overview of crime statistics in the area, in an interview with the GNA at Axim. He said 22 vehicles were involved in accidents in 2008 and 68 vehicles were recorded in connection with accidents in 2009. DSP Tesutor explained that out of 22 motor accident cases recorded in 2008, seven were fatal and 15 minor ones while 24 fatal and 25 minor ones were logged in 2009. He attributed the causes of road accidents to over speeding and carelessness on the part of motorists. The Police commander said the service has intensified its operations on the roads and will not deal leniently with motorists who flout traffic regulations.
