Majority Leader Urges MPs To Brace Up For Demanding Session

Parliament on Tuesday resumed sitting after the Easter break, where Mr Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the Majority Leader and Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, entreated Members to brace themselves for a demanding session.

He explained that the work of the House was expected to be demanding since a number of bills and other important businesses would be considered.

The Mid-year Review of the Budget Statement and Economic Policy of government for the 2019 Financial Year are part of the businesses to be considered.

Aware that political parties would be holding primaries to select parliamentary candidates for the December 2020 elections, Mr Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, on behalf of the Business Committee, urged the parties to ensure that there was a balanced representation in Parliament.

The House is expected to consider and pass the Vigilantism and Related Offences Bill, 2019, amongst 50 other bills expected to be presented.

They include the Ghana Technology University College Bill, 2019, Public Private Partnership Bill, 2019, Consumer Protection Bill, 2019, National Research Fund Bill, 2019, Affirmative Action Bill, 2019 and the National Road Safety Bill and the Creative Arts Bill, 2019.

Twenty-two bills are currently before some committees. These include Vigilantism and Related Offences 2019, Constitution (Amendment) Bill, 2019, Legal Profession (Amendment) Bill, 2018, Interstate Succession Bill, 2018, Ghana Cocoa Board (Amendment) Bill, 2017, and the Ghana Book Development Agency Bill, 2018.

Forty-five papers are expected to be presented during this meeting.

The House will also work on Instruments, Motions, Referrals as well as Directives from the Speaker.

The Speaker, Prof. Mike Oquaye, in a welcome address, admonished members to be punctual and dedicated to the business of the House.
