Goodluck Is Ecowas Chairman

Acting Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has been elected new ECOWAS Chairman. He succeeds Nigeria�s substantive President Musa Yar�adua who is currently undergoing medical treatment in Saudi Arabia. He took over from Yar�adua as Nigeria�s leader and has now succeeded him again as Chairman of ECOWAS.Heads of States attending the 37th Ordinary Summit of the ECOWAS bestowed the honour on him. According to CitiNews reporter, Richard Mensah the Liberian President, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf put up a spirited fight to win the chairmanship but lost it to Goodluck Jonathan.The Summit ended on Tuesday February 17, with hopes that many of the sub region�s problems of conflict and poverty will be addressed. Mr Goodluck Jonathan�s rise in politics has been generally described as meteoric.As his name suggests, Goodluck Jonathan, is said to have the habit of being in the right place at the right time.He was elected deputy governor of his home state, Bayelsa in 1999. Two years later his boss, the governor was impeached on corruption charges. Mr Jonathan then took over as governor of the State. Two years later he was hand-picked by former President Olusegun Obasanjo to run on the ruling PDP's ticket as vice-presidential candidate in 2007. Three years on, his boss, now Musa Yar�adua finds himself in a debilitating health condition and the power brokers in the oil-rich populous nation, decided to make him acting President. In less than a month after taking over as acting leader of the country, Heads of States at the at the 37th Ordinary Summit of the ECOWAS have elected him Chairman of the sub regional bloc.
