The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr David Asante-Apeatu and the Director-General of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), COP Maame Tiwaa Addo Danquah are to appear before court today, Monday, 22 July 2019 to answer to contempt charges.
This is in connection with the refusal of the police to release murder suspect Gregory Afoko despite a High Court order on 20 March 2019 that directed that he be released after meeting all the bail conditions.
Mr Afoko has been on trial since 2015 as a key suspect in the murder of the former Upper East Regional Chairman of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Adam Mahama.
Mr Mahama was attacked with acid on his way home on 20 May 2015 by two people and died later of extensive acid burns.
This is the second time the IGP has been dragged to court for contempt.
Mr Asante-Apeatu was convicted of contempt in October 2018 after the police refused a court order to provide security for the execution of another court order that gave the green light for the sale of a 12-block uncompleted flat at Redco in Madina.
