Preliminary projection based on the current annual insurance premium of 27.60 Ghana cedis indicates that people above 18 years will be required to pay 678 Ghana cedis under the one-time payment of insurance premium if it is implemented. Those from 30 years will have to pay 587 Ghana cedis whilst people from 50 years and 60 years will have to pay 355 Ghana cedis and 214 Ghana cedis respectively. Mr. Rojo Mettle Nunoo Deputy Minister of Health, made this known in Parliament following a question by Hon. Kwesi Ameyaw Kyeremeh, MP for Sunyani East. Hon. Kyeremeh wanted to know whether actuarial analysis relating to one-time payment of insurance premium had been done and what findings were made from the analysis. According to Mr. Rojo Mettle Nunoo, the projected premium as stated above will not be affordable to many Ghanaians. He said there will be the need for government to come out with rates that reflect the socio economic condition in the country to make the rate affordable to many people. Mr. Mettle Nunoo said government is exploring additional sources of funding for the national health insurance fund reserves to make the NHIS sustainable even after the introduction of the one-time premium.
