Parliament Ready To Support GFA’s $10.8m Budget Proposal For 2019/2020 League Season - Mpohor MP

Ranking Member of Parliament on Sports committee, Alex Kofi Agyekum who is a Member of Parliament for Mpohor constituency in the Western Region, is urging Parliament to support the GFA’s $10.8m budget proposal for the 2019/2020 Ghana Premier League season.

The Ghana Football Association under the newly elected President Kurt E S Okraku and the Executive Council have proposed a budget of US$10.8 million to government for the running of the 2019/2020 league season.

The budget includes the Division One League, Women’s League and the FA Cup.

The Member of Parliament believes anything that will be good for the running of the league will be welcomed by parliament.

He said he will support the idea if the proposal comes to the floor of parliament.

“It is big money but I believe if it’s a good thing that will help the course of footballing, we have to help, and I believe again that the government will find a way to support it,” he said.

According to him, government is committed to bringing back football to the people of Ghana through the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

“When it became difficult for clubs to participate in Africa competitions the government supported even though they were kicked out early, but that is the commitment that the government through the Ministry showed,” he added.

He is therefore appealing to the Executive Council of the football association to have a budget to support the upcoming domestic season and once they are able to attain a certain level other cooperate bodies will drive in to take up the sponsorship of the league.
