Ministry of Monitoring and Evaluation Launches “Results Fair” To Rate Implementing Ministries

The Ministry of Monitoring and Evaluation, headed by Dr Anthony Akoto Osei has launched the first-ever Ghana Results Fair in collaboration with the Ministry of Information as one of the efforts of the Akufo-Addo government to promote inclusive engagement and interactions between the public sector and the citizenry.

According to him, the government of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) under His Excellency, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, is committed to improving the wellbeing of all Ghanaians; hence, the need to promote evidence-based decision-making and improve accountability for results.

Addressing the media at the conference room of the Ministry of Information, the Old Tafo Member of Parliament indicated that, in view of this Results Fair dubbed “Delivering Results for our Citizens: A Work in Progress” implementing ministries of government priority programmes will be enabled to interact with citizens, civil society and the media to explain progress of implementation and achievements of government programmes including Flagship Programmes.

“The Results Fair will be a platform for promoting social accountability and creating an opportunity for increasing the voice and participation of the citizenry in the national development process”, he indicated.

Dr Anthony Akoto Osei again asserted that a lot has been accomplished since the Government led by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo came into office in January 2017; thus, it is his ministry’s role to establish systems and mechanisms for effective tracking of progress of implementation and achievement of the goals and objectives of key government programmes.

“We have performed this role in close partnership with Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) and other institutions such as the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC). Since 2017, my ministry has worked in close collaboration with the MDAs and other institutions to strengthen the foundation for effective generation and use of monitoring and evaluation (M&E) information for the management of ongoing programmes and for policy and decision-making”, he stated.

The Monitoring and Evaluation Minister said that his ministry, going forward, is investing more into evaluating the performance and impacts of the Government Flagship Programmes; however, developing a dashboard for data storage and dissemination.

He, therefore, assured that the Ministry’s role is not to name and shame MDAs but rather to work in tandem with the MDAs to determine what is working as well as to know what is not working in order to seek real-time solutions to implementation challenges so that the MDAs are able to optimise the effects of their policies and programmes.

The Ministry of Monitoring and Evaluation is one of the implementing entities of the Public Sector Reform for Results Projects (PSRRP) with the responsibility of improving Monitoring and Evaluation of Government’s programmes.

Specifically, the Results Fair will serve as a platform for apprising Ghanaians, especially the civil society of the progress of implementation and achievements of the Government’s programmes including the Flagship Programmes.

The Results Fair again will provide an opportunity for the citizenry to interact with the implementing ministries on performance and impacts of the Government’s programmes and to mobilise and galvanise citizens’ support towards effective implementation and optimisation of the impact of such programmes.

Finally, Ghana Results Fair seeks to provide an opportunity for knowledge sharing and idea sourcing to help bridge the results-based information gap. It is also to promote social accountability by increasing the voice of civil society and expanding the space for transparent and inclusive engagement between the public and the citizenry.

The Ghana Results Fair is however scheduled to take place from 14th to 16 January 2020 and it is sponsored by the Government of Ghana under the World Bank funded Public Sector Reform for Results Project (PSRRP).
