Editorial: Betty Mould Iddrisu

Throughout, the National Democratic Congresss (NDC) 2008 campaign, we made reference to the fact that the Kufuor administration, despite its vendetta towards members of the Rawlings administration, could not genuinely convict any of the Ministers in that regime; even those who were jailed, Kwame Peprah, Ibrahim Adam and Sipa Yankey, was under a very bizarre circumstance. The NPP had told the whole world that the Rawlings administration was corrupt and was going to jail members of that regime found to be corrupt. Unfortunately, for former President Kufuor, he could not achieve this aim because most of the NDC ministers were actually not corrupt and lived very decent and upright lifestyle. This is kind of situation members of the NDC would not like to find themselves in especially after investigations have indicated that some members of the Kufuor administration have been corrupt. Majority of NDC members said, they would not like members of the NPP to tell them it was because they were not corrupt that was why the Atta Mills administration could not jail any of them. This is the reason why there have been agitations across the length and breadth of the partys membership for the removal of the Minister of Justice and Attorney General, Mrs. Betty Mould-Iddrisu, who members of the party are of the view she is not up to the task of seeing justice done. The call for the removal of the Attorney General started late last year; even though not officially, there was some satisfaction among party supporters that she would be removed in the Presidents reshuffle exercise in the new year. It was for this reason that most party faithful greeted the Presidents reshuffle early this year with disappointment when they realized Madam Betty Mould Iddrisu and some non-performing Ministers, were still in the cabinet. Rumours have had it that the Minister of Justice and Attorney General had openly defied the President and had dared him to remove her. The Ghana Palaver learnt Madam Betty Mould Iddrisu was not alone in the defiance of the President, Dr. Hanna Bisew was also said to have called the Presidents bluff to send her to the Ministry of Communications. Who born dog, to quote former President Rawlings, for these women to defy the President, if it was true as rumoured in among party members. The foot soldiers are up in arms and have sworn to do everything it takes to get arrogant ministers out of office if they were not going to respect the President. Apart from that, the Minister of Justice and Attorney General had failed the party woefully and do not see how the NDC would go to the polls in 2012 with all these corrupt NPP former office holders telling the electorate the NDC could not jail them because they were not corrupt. How did the Kosmos Energy documents got missing from the Ministers office? Can she tell Ghanaians how the documents got out there? Is it true that Madam has assured some opposition functionaries that so long as she remains the AG, they will never be tried in any court? Is it true that Madam has assured some opposition functionaries that so long as she remains the AG, they will never be tried in any court? Is it true she defied the President? What has happened to the 46 cases she announced at a Press Conference late last year that year that they were ready for prosecution? Was that to sway public perception about her poor performance? The rank and file of the NDC, including the foot soldiers, are not happy with the Minister of Justice and Attorney General and would like to see her exit for someone willing to prosecute corrupt officials to take over her office. It is for reason that The Ghana Palaver is asking the Minister to take stock of her performance over the period she has been in office and see if it has justified the confidence the President had in her.
