GES Relieves Two Teachers Of Duties, Following Student’s Death

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has relieved two teachers of the KNUST Senior High School(SHS) of their duties as investigations get underway into the death of a final-year Business Student on Tuesday, July 07.

The affected teachers - Mr. Seth Owusu Ansah, a Senior House Master, and Mr. Anthony Awotwe, a Housemaster, according to preliminary investigations, have been found culpable of negligence of duty.

Mr. Mark Ofori, Ashanti Regional Public Relations Officer (PRO), GES, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Kumasi, that the affected teachers would be reassigned.

They would be posted to the Oforikrom Municipal Directorate of Education, while an enquiry is launched into the circumstances leading to the death of the late Sam Leonard.

This brings to three the number of KNUST SHS staff who had been called to order by the GES in the wake of the death, which sparked a massive demonstration by the students on Wednesday.

Ms. Felicia Dankwaa, the Headmistress currently had been asked to step aside while the Regional Directorate of Education takes over the administration of the School.

Circumstances leading to the demise of the final-year Business Student - the refusal of the School authorities to attend to him after he complained of a stomach upset, triggered a protest from his (deceased) colleague students.

This halted temporarily academic activities at the embattled institution as the students threatened to go on the rampage, but for the timely intervention of the police.
