Medical Staff At Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital Dies Of Covid-19, 170 Others Test Positive

Chief Executive of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), Dr Oheneba Owusu-Danso has revealed that a 55-year-old medical staff has died of Covid-19 last Sunday, July 12, 2020.

Though scanty information has been given about the deceased, it is believed, according to Joy News that the Allied Health professional was the head of the Physiotherapy Unit at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

Dr Oheneba Owusu-Danso revealed that 170 other staffs have tested positive; disclosing that “we have lost one of our staff but beyond that, we have only one staff who is admitted.

He, however, indicates 70 per cent of them have since recovered and are back to work. One staff of KATH is reported currently to be on admission, with majority of them being managed from home.

“The cumulative figure as at this week came to about 170 but in all this, about 70 per cent of them have all come back to work. They have fully recovered and come back to work,” he said.

The death of the Physiotherapist adds to the public healthcare workers and high profile casualties, after the demise of Medical Director at the Kwadaso SDA Hospital.

“For all these numbers, most of them have actually been taken care of from home and from their own self isolation or self quarantine.”

Dr. Oheneba Owusu-Danso without giving details of the deceased expressed his happiness about the recovery rate of patients.

Two-hundred and 30 (230) health workers have, as at July 10, 2020, tested positive for Covid-19 in the Ashanti Region. Komfo Anokye Hospital accounts for over 2-thirds of the number, many of them being nurses and doctors.

Meanwhile, Dr. Owusu-Danso wants staff of the hospital to be more conscious of their safety in the face rising scarcity of PPEs.

“I think the key thing is for us to take the responsibility into our individual selves and protect ourselves. Our destinies, our good health is currently in our hands,” he admonitioned.

As a first step to ensure safety at work place, Dr Owusu-Danso urged all health workers to use the certified locally-manufactured face masks and other protective equipments.

“Admonition is for all health staff to also begin to use the locally produced masks which have actually been tested by the Food and Drug Authority to be as very credible,” he said.
