Rape Victim Paralysed

An 11-year-old girl, who was allegedly defiled by a 33-year man about four years ago, is now paralysed. Strangely, parents of the victim who declined to report the case to the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service even when some good Samaritans ensured the arrest of the suspect have now sought the help of DOVVSU to take the matter up. The alleged defilement took place in 2007 at Krofrom in the Bosomtwi District of Ashanti. Yaw Frimpong, the suspect, who was 33 years then, fled when the incident was reported to the police, but was flushed from his hideout a month later and placed in custody at the Kumasi Central Police Station. Briefing the Times newspaper, the Ashanti Regional Co-ordinator of the DOVVSU, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Kwaku Amoako, said that the Ridge Police in Kumasi, who handled the case, gave an extract to the parents to forward the matter to DOVVSU, but surprisingly they back off. While the victim was then at the Intensive Care Unit of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital for treatment for two weeks, her father, Kwaku Duah, allegedly compromised with the family of the suspect and asked the police to release him (suspect) and the case was relegated to the background. DSP Amoako, who appears emotional, condemned the parents for trying to cover up the matter, but indicated that efforts would be made to ensure that justice prevailed in the case by bringing the suspect to book. Meanwhile, he said the unit has mounted a search for the suspect.
