Don't Disappoint Ghanaians - Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin Told

A lecturer of the Central University in Accra, Dr. Benjamin Okyere Ankrah has cautioned the newly elected Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Bagbin not to disappoint Ghanaians.

Hon. Alban Bagbin was on Thursday, January 7 elected Speaker of the 8th Parliament following the dissolution of the 7th Parliament.

However, there are fears he may favour his political party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), which is on the opposition bench as this is the first time in Ghana's history under the Fourth Republic that a member of an opposition party has become the Speaker of Parliament.

There are arguments the opposition NDC may influence him to sabotage the sitting President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the NPP Members of Parliament.

Dr. Benjamin Okyere Ankrah has counseled the Speaker to execute his duty effectively.

According to him, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin has a rich Parliamentary experience and should ensure his legacy is not soiled by any activity that will demean his character and integrity.

''Bagbin is one of the most experienced. He's been in Parliament for 28 years. If truth would prevail, he's supposed to be the best of all the Speakers that have come and gone. He's supposed to be the best because he has seen it all," he said.

He shared a strong conviction that Rt. Hon. Bagbin will be a great Speaker of the House.

''I have a strong conviction that Bagbin will do well. He should not disappoint us. I'm sorry but someone like Martin Amidu, I used to give him a standing ovation whenever I mention his name. Unfortunately, I was disappointed. He didn't impress me at all. I plead with the Rt. Honorable Bagbin that he should not disappoint Ghanaians because we know his character. We know what he stands for and his values; so he should execute his duty effectively," he told sit-in host Nana Yaw Kesseh on Peace FM's ''Kokrokoo''.
