Repeat Offenders Of COVID-19 Safety Protocols Will Be Prosecuted - Police Warns

Director of Public Affairs of the Ghana Police Service, Superintendent Sheila Abayie Buckman (Mrs) has cautioned the general public that the police will be left with no choice to prosecute persons who have been arrested for not wearing facemask.

According to her, inasmuch as it is the desire of the Ghana Police Service to continue to sensitize the public about the wearing of facemask, the Police personnel will not hesitate to find the provision under the law to prosecute repeat offenders.

Briefing the media at the conference room of the Ministry of Information on the Police activities, Superintendent Buckman (Mrs) hinted that since 18th January 2021, the Police has arrested a total of 961 persons.

She added that the Greater Accra Region has the highest number of arrest of 330 out of the 961 persons; emphasizing that the Police had given verbal caution to 484 persons out of the 961 who were discharged as well as given written caution to 477 of the total arrested persons.

She reiterated that the Ghana Police Service as part of its activities to enforce the instruction of President Akufo-Addo to ensure the wearing of the facemasks and also adhering to the safety protocols had granted some 477 persons who were arrested bail after they were made to wear their masks and do so properly.

“Repeat offenders; if we arrest you again in this next trip and we realise that you are a repeat offender, you will leave us with no choice than to find the provision under the law to prosecute you,” she cautioned.

She, however, made a special appeal to the public, the media and to the human rights advocacies to join the effort with the Police in reaching out to the masses to wear their facemasks at all times at public places to protect all from contracting the deadly COVID-19 disease.

“So, please, let’s all get on board and preach the good of wearing the mask to ensure that we stop coronavirus,” she appealed.
