Director-General for Public Affairs of the Ghana Police Service, DSP Sheila Abayie Buckman says the next step of the police to ensure adherence to the COVID-19 preventive etiquettes is to embark on nationwide random stop and search both commercial and private vehicles to find those who are flouting the law.

According to her, the police starting from Thursday, January 28, 2021 will be stopping vehicles on the road to check passengers facemasks and and allow those in masks to continue the journey.

Speaking to the media at the Ministry of Information conference room, DSP Sheila Buckman explained that any police officer in uniform can stop and look at whether the passengers are wearing facemasks properly.

“You can be travelling from Tamale to Accra or travelling from Ho to Hohoe or whatever or from Madina to Adenta and it could be a commercial vehicle most especially but it can also be private vehicle; for as long as we see two or more on the vehicle, any police officer in uniform can stop, look at whether you are wearing your mask properly, the passengers who are wearing their masks properly will be made to go but those who are without facemasks, until you find your mask and wear it well, you cannot board the next vehicle,” she hinted.

Outlining some of the activities of the police to sensitize the general public about the proper wearing of the facemasks, DSP Buckman said that they have been visiting public places like open bars randomly to lock the places that are not ensuring COVID-19 safety protocols.

She again hinted that the police in the various municipals and districts have been engaging the various assemblies to see how they can activate their by-laws to ensure enforcement of the wearing of facemasks as their by-laws permit specifically to the regions.
