What's The Shame In Testing Positive For COVID-19? - Kokofu Warns Against Stigma

Former Member of Parliament(MP) for Bantama constituency, Henry Kokofu has advised Ghanaians not to stigmatize COVID-19 patients.

He asked the citizenry to note that the Coronavirus (COVID-19) can infect any person and so there is no need for one to face stigma because he or she has contracted the disease or recovered from the disease.

There is currently an upsurge in cases of COVID-19 in the country.

Ghana's confirmed cases stand at 67,782 with 61,843 Recoveries/Discharge and 424 deaths.

As at Tuesday, February 2, the country recorded 772 daily cases of the disease resulting in 5,515 active cases.

This data is provided by the Ghana Health Service.

Henry Kokofu, speaking on Peace FM's ''Kokrokoo'', warned against people ridiculing or stigmatizing COVID-19 patients because such attitude could potentially discourage people from taking a test and those who have tested positive from going for medical treatment.

"If you test positive, what's the shame in this? And you who is ridiculing the person who has tested positive, what is the ridicule about because we're all at risk?'' he queried.

"Ridiculing or stigmatizing a person doesn't benefit anyone. If that happens, when someone tests positive, he or she will hide it because the person fears family or peers will abandon him or her," he stressed.
