Horrific!… 18 Perish, 45 Injured In Road Crash

Eighteen passengers died while 45 others were injured when the vehicles in which they were travelling crashed head-on yesterday at Sarekyekuta near Buipe in the Central Gonja District on the Tamale-Kumasi main road.

Sixteen were said to have died on the spot while two others were pronounced dead at the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH).

 Acting Police Public Relations Officer (PRO) of Savannah Region, Inspector Agyekum Owusu, who confirmed this to the Ghanaian Times,said that the bodies of the dead had been deposited at the Holistic Medical Hospital, at Buipe and TTH mortuaries.

He indicated that some of the injured were taken to TTH, while others were rushed to Holistic Medical Hospital at Buipe.

Inspector Owusu said that a Yutong bus with registration number GT 3345-16 was heading towards Zebila in the Upper East Region from Kumasi, while the other vehicle with registration number AC 1699-20 was travelling from Garu also in the region to Kumasi when they crashed at Sarekyekuta.

It is recalled that 10 people died while 32 others were injured when the vehicle in which they were travelling was involved in an incident at Nasia in West Mamprusi Municipality of the North East regionlast week, on the Nasia bridge. 

Two of them died on the sport while eight others died in Walewale hospital and the TTH, and the injured who, were in critical condition, have been rushed to the TTH and the Walewale hospital.

The driver of the vehicle, Tanko Ibrahim, said he was trying to dodge a cow which was crossing the road and crashed onto a metal pole of bridge and landed on the shoulder of the bridge

The vehicle which was carrying about 45 passengers was said to be heading towards Bawku in the Upper East Region from Kumasi 

The Motor Traffic and Transport Department and other police  personnel who were dispatched to the accident scene could not  talk to journalists as they were busy trying to rescue passengers who were trapped in the vehicle, which has been damaged beyond repair.
