'Ghana Is Bigger Than Any Opposition Party' - Atik Blasts NDC Over Opposing Committee On Ejura Killings

Former PNC General Secretary, Atik Mohammed has taken a swipe at the National Democratic Congress for opposing the establishment of a Public Inquiry Committee into the unfortunate situation at Ejura days ago.

President Nana Akufo-Addo has directed the Interior Minister to undertake a public inquiry into the shooting and killing incident at Ejura.

The Minister is to provide a detailed report with recommendations on the incident.

"The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has instructed the Minister for the Interior, Hon. Ambrose Dery, MP, to conduct, forthwith, a Public Inquiry into the circumstances that led to the unfortunate occurrences of Tuesday, 29th June 2021.

"The Interior Minister is to provide a detailed report from the Inquiry, with recommendations for appropriate action, within ten days, i.e., by 9th July 2021, to President Akufo-Addo," a statement issued by the President's Communications Director stated.

In response to the President's directive, a three-member Committee is to be set up to probe the issue but the Minority have reportedly objected to the initiative.

Reacting to the issue, Atik wondered what the NDC seeks to achieve by opposing the Committee.

"So, we should leave the issue unresolved, unanswered or what?", he asked, stressing, "the essence of opposition is to keep government in range but not to misdirect and mislead government. That is not the idea because what they're saying is the government shouldn't do anything. That we don't deserve to know what happened; that we shouldn't know the truth. If this is the mindset of the opposition, then are we ruling the country?"

He shared a strong opinion that the NDC's opposition is only aimed at making the Akufo-Addo administration unpopular to the Ghanaian populace so the NDC will come back to power.

This mindset by the oppostion party, he noted, is nation-wrecking.

"My suspicion is that the reason why they don't want the public inquriy to be conducted, as it stands now, the accusation is that the government orchestrated the killing of him because he was expressing his mind on things affecting Ghana, particularly the Ejura community. So, without public inquiry to expose the truth, this narrative stays and this is not the kind of narrative any government likes.

"So, it is in the interest of the opposition to maintain the status quo so that everybody will scold the government. So, it is in their interest to say that don't do the public inquiry for us to unearth the truth so that we will continue to accuse you as killers and so on and so forth, but Ghana is bigger than any opposition party," he told Kwami Sefa Kayi on Peace FM's 'Kokrokoo'.
