Director-General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr Patrick Kuma-Aboagye has cautioned Ghanaians against disobeying the COVID-19 preventive protocols as Ghana records the most contagious Coronavirus variant called Delta variant.

On June 22, 2021, a statement signed by Dr Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, indicated that though Ghana has detected six Delta variants at the Kotoka International Airport, "no Delta variant has been detected from samples taken from cases in the community".

But recent news state that Ghana has become the latest country to record the Delta Variant of the SARS-Cov-2 virus within a community.

The detection of the Delta variant, which originates from India, is said to be more transmissible than any variant and was confirmed in Ghana by the Ghana Health Service on Friday, July 2, 2021 on the Facebook page of the Ministry of Information.

Speaking in an interview with host Kwami Sefa Kayi on Peace FM's 'Kokrokoo' Monday morning, the GHS Director-General dispelled speculations that those vaccinated still stand a risk of contracting the Delta variant stressing the vaccine protects the recipients.

Dr. Patrick Kuma however noted that, although the vaccine can protect, it is not 100 percent effective against the virus variants.

He therefore is calling on Ghanaians to strictly adhere to the COVID-19 preventive etiquette, i.e. mandatory wearing of nose masks, social distancing, hands washing and the use of the hand sanitizer.

This, he said, is the only preventive measure against the Delta, Alpha variants among others. 

"No vaccine gives 100 percent protection . . . The good thing is that, when you're vaccinated, it protects you from severe disease. It protects you from death. So, maybe you will get something like mild symptoms because you're protected. So, that one is there but all the vaccines, so far are effective against the Delta variant . . . but like I'm saying there's no vaccine that protects anybody 100%," he said.
