Prez Akufo-Addo Releases GHC14.3 Million For Conjoined Twins’ Surgery

Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Tuesday 31 August 2021 released a total of GHC14,394,397.58, covering the cost of operation and the purchase of surgical equipment for surgery on the conjoined twins.

The series of procedures is expected to begin in the second week of September. The president pledged a few months ago, on behalf of the government, to take care of the full cost of the surgery at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge Hospital).

On Tuesday, through the Chief of Staff based at the Office of the President, Akosua Frema Osei-Opare, the cheque was presented to the hospital officials, paving way for the treatments to be carried out. It is expected that the separation of the twins and other needed operations will be carried out over a period of one year. It is the first time such a surgical procedure, involving twins joined at the head, will be undertaken in Ghana, health officials say.

The president has also instructed that all resources needed to carry out the surgeries should be made available to Ridge Hospital without delay.

The lead surgeon for the planned separation of the conjoined twins, Dr Samuel Kaba, said a team of roughly 160 medical and non-medical staff will be involved in the entire process.
