SIM Registration: NDC Is Just Being a Nuisance – Mame Yaa Aboagye

Mame Yaa Aboagye, Deputy Communications Director of the ruling NPP, has appealed to Ghanaians to participate in the SIM card registration directed by the Ministry of Communication to curb mobile phone fraud in the country.

She asked Ghanaians to ignore the opposition NDC saying they are a nuisance and only want to incite citizens against the registration.

Mame Yaa Aboagye emphasized that the exercise will benefit Ghanaians especially the Mobile Money users to curb fraud and other criminal activities perpetrated by fraudsters using fake SIM cards.

The Minority in Parliament is demanding the immediate withdrawal of the threat to deactivate all SIM cards not re-registered by March 2022.

According to Deputy Ranking Member on the Communications Committee, Sam George, the legislation that backs SIM registration does not make the Ghana card the sole card for purposes of registration.

“The current legislation that backs SIM registration in Ghana is the Ll 2006 passed by Parliament in 2011. This legislation saw the registration that happened in 2012. This Legislation Instrument does not mandate the linkage of the Ghana Card to activate SIM Cards,” he said.

But to Mame Yaa Abaogye, “the exercises will also help authorities ascertain the accurate number of valid and accurate SIMs on the networks, enable operators to build better demographics of their customer base and help them develop products and services to suit the various groupings".

She further indicated that SIM registration will enhance economic growth by drawing huge confidence in the telecommunications sector.

“Let's embrace change and ignore NDC’s negativity,” she said.
