Addressing Youth Unemployment Requires Much Attention For Manufacturing Sector - Assin North MP

Member of Parliament(MP) for Assin North constituency, James Gyakye Quayson, has said youth unemployment which is a major challenge in Ghana and West Africa will continue to persist unless conscious efforts are made to develop the manufacturing sector for the processing of raw materials into finished products.

James Gyakye Quayson made the comment in an interview with Peace FM News.

He lamented the fact that the country, just like other countries in Africa export agricultural raw materials and minerals like gold, diamond and manganese instead of processing the raw materials to create employment for the youth who could be employed to work in the manufacturing industries.

According to the Assin North MP, there is also the need for a well developed apprenticeship programme to train the youth to acquire employable skills to make them self employed instead of relying on government to employ them.

Commenting on measures which could be taken to attract investors to establish businesses in the country, James Gyakye Quayson said government must provide adequate infrastructure such as good roads, provide tax incentives for investors and ensure adequate security to minimise crime in the country.

Hon Quayson also advised the public to change their negative mentality of always trying to undermine local investors instead of supporting them to succeed in their businesses.
