Is This "Why God Gave" NPP Plus One Majority In Parliament?
Government is yet to reach an agreement with the Minority caucus in Parliament regarding the 1.75% electronic transactions levy (E-Levy), which announcement on November 17 generated heated controversies in and outside the House.
Earlier, the Minority had insisted that government totally scraps the levy. Days after, Minority leader, Haruna Iddrisu said they will accept a reduction from 1.75 to 1%.
However, in a statement released by the Finance Minister indicating some modifications made to the 2022 budget Ken Ofori Atta indicated that: "On the matter of the E-levy, having regard to its serious fiscal implications, we will continue our consultations with the Minority Caucus in Parliament and other relevant stakeholders, with a view to achieving consensus and reverting to the House in the shortest possible time".
The Finance Minister, Ken Ofori Atta on Tuesday during a one-on-one interview on Peace FM morning show 'Kokrokoo' was asked what will be the situation should the Minority continue to be "adamant"; in response, he said: "That’s why God gave us [Majority] one more vote than them (Minority). They all move to philosophically accept it, that’s a good way to move forward.”
Ken Ofori-Atta noted that the proposed e-levy in the 2022 budget remains 1.75% and not 1.5% as some members of parliament.
