Ghana Mine Workers Union Is Enslaving Its Members; Help Us Liberate Them - EIWUG

The Extractive Industry Workers Union of Ghana(EIWUG) has called on appropriate authorities to, as a matter of urgency, bring the Ghana Mine Workers Union (GMWU) to order so they will allow their members who want to denounce their membership and join a different Union to do so.

According to them, the Ghana Mine Workers Union has refused to grant the request of their members from various mining companies to join other Unions like the Extractive Industry Workers Union and have their freedom.

The EIWUG further stated that the GMWU is not giving the necessary documentations to join other Unions, thereby accusing them of enslaving the members.

Speaking to Peace FM News reporter, Pious Baidoo Banson, the Executive Director of EIWUG, Mr. Victor Asare Gyapong said, "there are thousands of miners who want to join the Extractive Workers Union from the Ghana Mine Workers Union but they are not getting the chance though three different courts have ruled in their favour''.

Addressing a press conference in Accra, he added they believe the Ghana Mine Workers Union is refusing the members because of their selfish interest and the goodies that their executives enjoy from the members.

Mr. Victor Asare Gyapong called on trade union fraternity including Industrial-All Global Union and ILO to address the Ghana Mine Workers Union since the Trade Union Congress is refusing to do so.
