'We're Not In Good Times' - Governance Lecturer Appeals To Teachers To Reconsider Strike

Governance Lecturer at the Central University, Dr. Benjamin Otchere-Ankrah, has called on his fellow teachers who are on strike and government to reach a compromise regarding the increment they seek in their Cost of Living Allowance (COLA).

The teacher unions commenced their strike action on Monday, July 4 and continue to lay down their working tools despite calls on them to call off the strike.

Government's efforts to find an amicable solution to the situation haven't yet proven effective.

In a discussion about the labour unions' industrial action during Peace FM's 'Kokrokoo' programme, Dr. Otchere-Ankrah noted that should the government offer to increase their allowance not by the 20 percent they request, the teachers must accept and resume work.

"I fully support you but if the government cannot give you the 20 percent but can provide 10, 15 or 18%, please accept it . . . they should soften their stance. There must be a compromise somewhere," he said.

He was worried that, "if care is not taken, in the next two/three weeks, the whole country will be brought to a halt", so asked the teachers to be considerate stressing "we are not in good times at all and all over the world, the countries are suffering".
