Power Supply To Krobo Will Soon Be Restored - Energy Minister Assures

The Energy Minister, Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has assured residents at Yilo Krobo in the Eastern Region that the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) will soon restore power supply to the community.

Reports indicated that the ECG has since July 27, 2022 cut power to the community after the residents refused to allow the company to replace their postpaid meters with prepaid ones.

A section of the residents are also said to harbor a notion that the first President of Ghana, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, promised them of free electricity after 50 years as their compensation for the establishment of the Akosombo Dam in the Region.

The management of the company also says it has withdrawn its officials and relocated its offices from the community due to the people's aggression towards them.

Addressing the issue in an interview on Peace FM's "Kokrokoo" programme, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh disclosed that he's had a consultative meeting with the Chiefs, former Members of Parliament and opinion leaders of the community to solve the problem.

He noted that the Chiefs have agreed to let the residents allow ECG to install the prepaid meters.

As a result, he has also advised the management of the company to resupply electricity to the area.

"We arrived at a consensus that the leaders will annouce to the residents that they have admitted that they will be given prepaid meters but we have set up a Committee to meet with the ECG management regarding the arrears. So, when the Chiefs relay the information, the ECG officials will then go, check the transformers and switch the lights back on," he said.
